India is advancing with its strategy to procure an additional five S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia. The move comes as Moscow has submitted a pricing proposal, setting the stage for negotiation discussions with New Delhi. The ultimate decision on the acquisition will rest with the Cabinet Committee on Security, contingent on a finalized price and clearance from the Finance Ministry. The existing deal for five S-400 systems, signed in 2018 at a cost of $5.43 billion, is anticipated to be completed with the last system expected to be delivered by November 2026.
These additional S-400 systems are poised to significantly bolster India’s air defence capabilities, particularly along the eastern sector where tensions with China remain a pressing concern. The role of the S-400 systems was notably highlighted during India’s air defence operations in Operation Sindoor in May 2025. The system’s performance during this period has reinforced the rationale for India to expand its S-400 fleet.
On a related note, India has yet to reach a decision regarding the potential purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. The Indian Air Force has shown interest in this proposal, especially given China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet. However, no commitment has been made at this juncture.
The proposed acquisition of additional S-400 systems is expected to be a significant topic in broader defence discussions between India and Russia. These discussions are likely to gain further impetus with the upcoming visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit in September.
