China has voiced its disapproval against a proposed sanctions bill in the United States aimed at penalizing major purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas, including China itself. The Foreign Ministry, through its spokesperson Lin Jian, emphasized that the nation would undertake all necessary actions to safeguard the legitimate interests and rights of its enterprises.
Lin articulated that China’s stance is firmly against unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law and are not sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council. This statement underscores China’s ongoing resistance to sanctions that it perceives as extrajudicial and not in alignment with global legal standards.
The legislation under consideration in the U.S. intends to impose sanctions on the largest global consumers of Russian crude oil and natural gas, with China being a significant focus. This move is seen as part of broader efforts to curtail the financial inflow to Russia through its energy exports.
In response, Lin cautioned that employing double standards and resorting to coercive measures would ultimately prove ineffective. He reiterated China’s opposition to what it views as unlawful unilateral actions, suggesting that such measures could backfire, complicating international relations and economic interactions.
