Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced strong criticism against the decision by the Trump administration to put on hold new sanctions against Russia, cautioning that this move might embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin to escalate the conflict in Ukraine. Zelenskyy argued that the suspension of sanctions could be perceived as a reward for Moscow, potentially undermining efforts to resolve the ongoing war.
The halted sanctions would have imposed additional restrictions on Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation network. They included provisions for tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil, such as China and India. However, the Trump administration decided to pause these measures for 60 days to evaluate their possible repercussions on the global economy and U.S. interests.
While Russian officials have welcomed the pause, concerns have arisen in Kyiv regarding Washington’s dedication to maintaining pressure on Moscow. Zelenskyy urged the United States to reconsider its decision and called for European nations to engage diplomatically with Russia independently.
Zelenskyy’s warnings come amidst intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, raising alarms about potential power shortages as winter approaches. Recent Russian strikes have reportedly damaged more than 15 major electricity generation and transmission facilities, putting additional strain on Ukraine’s air defense systems, which are already challenged in intercepting missiles and drones.
The Ukrainian president also highlighted the impact of restrictions on Starlink satellite internet services, which have disrupted some military operations, including drone activities. This situation underscores the growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over sanctions, military support, and strategies for ending the war.
Zelenskyy maintains that sustained pressure on Russia is crucial for achieving lasting peace. He warned that easing restrictions while Russian attacks continue could lead to a prolonged conflict, emphasizing the need for continued international support to protect Ukraine’s critical infrastructure and civilian populations.
