In a significant gathering focused on bolstering Ukraine’s defense against escalating Russian attacks, European leaders are convening in Kyiv. The discussions are centered on Ukraine’s urgent need for enhanced air-defense systems as missile strikes on its cities grow more frequent and deadly. The meeting, dubbed the Coalition of the Willing, is spearheaded by Britain, France, and Germany, with other European leaders joining remotely. Notably, EU Council President Antonio Costa is also participating in the summit.
Recent Russian missile strikes have wreaked havoc in Kyiv and other areas, inflicting civilian casualties and destroying residential areas. This has intensified Ukraine’s appeals for more robust air-defense systems, specifically interceptors, from its allies. In response, Britain is expected to reaffirm its support for Ukraine, while France is moving towards local production of the long-range SCALP missile. Additionally, France has committed to supplying more interceptor missiles to fortify Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern over the dwindling supply of Patriot interceptor missiles, essential for Ukraine’s defense strategy. In 2023, Ukraine received 675 of these interceptors, but the number declined to 364 in 2025, with a projected 264 for 2026. As the winter season approaches, Kyiv is seeking at least 300 additional interceptors to bolster its defenses.
Ukraine’s reliance on advanced Western air-defense technology is crucial due to the complex nature of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. Acknowledging this dependency, European allies are exploring avenues to sustain and possibly increase the flow of these critical systems. Simultaneously, they aim to maintain pressure on Moscow, underscoring the strategic importance of supporting Ukraine in its ongoing conflict.
