In a fresh wave of criticism, Russia has accused the United States of relinquishing its historic role as a neutral mediator in the ongoing Ukraine conflict, while also condemning Europe for bolstering its military spending and defense capabilities. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, addressing this issue in Moscow, claimed that Washington has shifted from its impartial stance, opting instead to ramp up sanctions against Russia.
This criticism follows a recent agreement among G7 leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, to intensify economic measures against Russia, particularly targeting its energy sector. Since assuming office again in 2025, Trump has aimed to facilitate dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv. However, these diplomatic initiatives have hit a stalemate, largely due to Ukraine’s refusal to accommodate Russia’s demands for territorial concessions, military restrictions, and limits on Western aid.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced concerns over Europe’s military strategies, suggesting that European nations are actively preparing for a potential conflict with Russia through increased defense budgets and rearmament efforts. He reiterated Russia’s demand for Ukraine’s withdrawal from the eastern Donbas region and announced that Russian forces are nearing control of the key city of Kostiantynivka. Furthermore, Putin accused Ukraine and its Western allies of supporting operations aimed at destabilizing Russia by targeting its infrastructure.
The conflict, which ignited with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has led to significant human and material losses, with hundreds of thousands of casualties and millions displaced. Despite persistent international attempts to broker peace, the outlook for a negotiated resolution remains bleak.
