Russian President Vladimir Putin has turned down a proposal from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a direct meeting to further peace talks, citing a lack of purpose in such discussions at the present time. This statement was made during Putin’s appearance at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where he dismissed Zelenskyy’s suggestion to hold the meeting in a neutral venue like Switzerland or Turkey. Zelenskyy had proposed initiating diplomatic negotiations from the current battle lines and suggested implementing a complete ceasefire during these discussions.

Putin reiterated that Russia’s strategic goals in Ukraine have not changed. He highlighted that Russian forces have established control over the entire Luhansk region and a significant portion of the Donetsk region. Additionally, he restated Moscow’s demand that Ukraine must also surrender control over the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. In response, Zelenskyy criticized the Kremlin for opting to prolong the conflict rather than striving for a diplomatic resolution, asserting that Russia’s refusal to meet demonstrates an unwillingness to end the war.

In the meantime, Ukraine has escalated its military actions against Russian targets, focusing on military and energy infrastructure. Recent operations have included drone strikes against ports, cargo ships, and fuel facilities. Russia has acknowledged these attacks and announced plans to bolster its air defense systems in response.

During the forum, Putin also addressed criticisms concerning the state of the Russian economy amidst the ongoing war and international sanctions. He contended that, despite the economic challenges and financial restrictions imposed by Western countries, Russia’s economy remains robust and resilient.
