Peter Cullen, the celebrated Canadian voice actor renowned for bringing life to iconic characters such as Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, has passed away at the age of 85. Cullen’s family announced that he died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, surrounded by loved ones.
Originating from Montreal, Cullen began his illustrious career in Canadian television and radio before becoming a household name in the voice acting world. He first lent his voice to the heroic Optimus Prime in the 1984 Transformers animated series, a role he reprised in seven blockbuster films from 2007 to 2023 and various spin-off projects. His portrayal of the character helped define the franchise for generations of fans.
Apart from his work with Transformers, Cullen became synonymous with Eeyore, the famously gloomy donkey from Winnie the Pooh. He voiced Eeyore across multiple television series, films, and video games, imbuing the character with a memorable blend of melancholy and charm. Cullen’s diverse vocal talents also included roles such as KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT in Knight Rider, the menacing clicks of the creature in the 1987 film Predator, and the ferocious roar of King Kong in the 1976 remake.

He shared that Larry’s influence encouraged him to portray the character as an embodiment of true heroism—strong yet compassionate without aggression.
