TOKYO – Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. has confirmed the development and operational management of its first Okura Resort property in Japan, to be situated in the culturally significant hot spring region of Hakone Gora. The resort is provisionally scheduled to commence operations in 2029.
This initiative follows an operational management agreement established with Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd. in 2025, which will serve as the property owner and developer. The selection of Hakone, an area drawing close to 20 million annual visitors due to its thermal waters and natural topography, is central to the brand’s strategic vision.
“Hakone represents one of Japan’s most special destinations, deeply rooted in both natural splendor and historical context,” remarked Toshihiro Ogita, President of Hotel Okura. The new resort is designed to integrate this unique destination appeal with Okura’s signature hospitality standards.
The property, conceived as a “Forest Hideaway” by designer Gwenael Nicolas, will comprise 58 guest rooms. A distinctive feature of the accommodations is the inclusion of a private open-air bath in every room, supplied with authentic hot spring water from the renowned Owakudani source. Comprehensive facilities will further include indoor hot spring baths, saunas, a dedicated teppanyaki restaurant, and a contemporary bar lounge, establishing a premier luxury retreat.
