President Donald Trump has announced that US-Canada trade talks are “hereby terminated,” following a controversy over an ad featuring Ronald Reagan .
The ad, sponsored by the Canadian province of Ontario, used a clip from a 1987 presidential address where Reagan warns that “trade barriers hurt every American worker.”
Trump took to truth social media to denounce the ad as “fake” and “fraudulent,” accusing Canada of “egregious behavior” and interference in US court proceedings on tariffs.
The ad was a protest against steep US tariffs (now 35%) on Canadian goods, which have hit Ontario hard. Premier Doug Ford, who launched the ad, defended its cooperative spirit.
However, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation has also condemned the ad. It stated that the “selective audio” was used without permission and “misrepresents” the full context of Reagan’s speech.
